When Alabaster Box went live on BBC television

It was something the four-member Alabaster Box, an acappella group had only been dreaming about but it manifested rapidly last Wednesday, April 2, when they performed live on the BBC Focus on Africa television programme.

Alabaster Box was invited to the United Kingdom by Jesus House, London, a
member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), for a three-day event from March 14 to March 16.

At a concert on March 14, they performed alongside international gospel music greats like Jonathan Butler, Kirk Whalum, Chevelle Franklin, Otty, Caleb and the captivating dance group, Synergy.

The group was invited to BBC Focus on Africa (radio) for a recorded singing and interview session with Akwasi Sarpong at the BBC Broadcasting House at Portland Place in the centre of London.

“After the radio interview, we took a stroll to the television section where we met Focus on Africa TV host, Sophie Ikenya and she insisted we performed live that night,” said group leader, Samuel Dowuona.

“She said they had never hosted a gospel act on the show, much more from Africa. They had also not had a Ghanaian group of any shade on the show though it started with Ghana's own Komla Dumor of blessed memory as the anchor.

Alabaster Box performed two songs: one in Ga called Nyonmo Baafee and the other was the group’s own version of the popular Swahili gospel song, Nime Kombo Lewa.

Samuel Dowuona was interviewed by show anchor Sophie Ikenya. During the interview, he talked of their plans to tour Africa after several visits to the UK and United States over the past 19 years of their existence.

The group is expected back in Ghana April ending, after performances in Doncaster, Sheffield, Leeds, Bath and London.

They will launch their third album, Level Don Change, on their return. The group’s two previous albums are From Welcome to Goodbye (2002) and Unto The King (2004).

Alasbaster Box comprises Samuel Dowuona (Journalist), Gideon Allotey (Real Estates Developer), Horst Ayub (Graphic Designer) and Michael Allotey ( Marketer).
