Canadian Government Cancels Nigerian President Jonathan’s State Visit

A state visit being planned by Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan to Canada for February has been canceled by the Canadian Government.
The cancelation happened in the same week it was revealed the President secretly signed a controversial law banning gays, lesbians, and sexual minorities in Nigeria.

Sources in Abuja told Saharareporters that the Nigerian Ambassador to Canada, Ojo Madueke, was told to inform President Jonathan that the state visit to Canada scheduled for February 13 and 14th 2014 has now been canceled.

Gays dare jonathan, plans protest in Abuja

According to what i gathered, Nigerian gays and lesbians, under the aegis of ‘The Right Defense’, are daring President Goodluck Jonathan, and would soon stage a demonstration in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, they said in a statement on Saturday.

They are protesting against the anti-gay law which took effect on 7 January this year when the president signed it.

Although overwhelmingly supported by Nigerians, the law has been sharply criticised by western countries, especially the United States and Britain, which see it as an infringement on the rights of gays and lesbians.

Nigerian gays in a statement they accompanied with masked pictures of themselves said they were protesting against an “undemocratic and unlawful discrimination” of gays and lesbians and trans-genders in the country.

Teacher, 25 defiles 5-year-old pupil

A 25-year-old teacher has been arrested by the Odorkor Police for allegedly defiling a five-year-old pupil.

The suspect, Nana Yaw Addo Larbi, popularly called Sir Larbi, was said to have defiled the pupil in the washroom of a school at Gbawe in Accra on Tuesday, January 14, 2014.

Even though the victim is a pupil of the school where Sir Larbi teaches, he is not her class teacher.

Confirming the case to the Daily Graphic in Accra, the Odorkor District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Mr Abraham Acquaye, said the victim’s parents reported the case to the police after they had sought medical attention for their daughter who had bled from her private parts on that fateful Tuesday.

The victim was in the school with other pupils who were waiting after school hours for a school bus to send them home.

The commander said the victim told a medical doctor that a teacher called Sir Larbi forcibly had sex with her in the washroom.

She said Sir Larbi had followed her to the washroom when she went to urinate in the course of waiting for the school bus.

That was after the victim had refused to disclose to her parents and other relations who had questioned her after seeing blood in her panties what had happened to her.

24 Lashes threat

The girl is said to have told the doctor that the teacher had threatened to give her 24 lashes if she disclosed what had happened to anybody.

About 5 p.m. on that Tuesday, when the girl got home, she told her mother that she wanted to wash her panties while a relative was washing their dirty clothes.

Even though the mother protested, the relative asked the girl to go ahead and wash her panties.

“It was when she removed her panties to wash that her mother and the other relative noticed that the panties were soaked with blood,” Mr Acquaye said.

Clots of blood

An examination of the victim’s private parts revealed that she had clots of blood oozing out.

She was quickly rushed to a nearby private clinic, where she confided in the doctor who examined her that she had been defiled by one Sir Larbi.

As a result of the nature of her condition, the doctor referred the victim to the Police Hospital for further treatment.

Mr Acquaye said the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Odorkor Police had concluded its investigations and would process the suspect for court on Tuesday, January 21, 2014.

I wouldn’t know until you tell me…
Well, it is my personal life and I don’t like discussing my private life with people. It is left for me and the people around me to know. So, am not going into any other details.

What gave you the courage to marry someone from your industry in the first place?
I think that will be attributed to my young age. When you are still young, you do a lot of funny things and as you grow up, you become more mature and understand a lot of things because your eyes will be open widely to so many things, I did that because I was a baby. But mind you, I didn’t say I want to get married any time soon nor looking for a husband.

Meaning your previous marriage was a mistake?
I never said so. Maybe it shouldn’t have ended up like that. I keep saying that my past marriage is something I don’t want to remember or talk about at all, but you journalists won’t let me be.

What would you say didn’t made the marriage work?
I don’t know.

 Who was wrong among the 2 of you?
Are we all perfect? Since we are not all perfect and we also have our shortcomings like I keep saying, so it may be from him or me but I don’t know, whichever way it is, we all have our shortcomings. As long as blood runs through our veins, that means mistakes will always surface because there is no perfect man on the planet. What I did in the past wasn’t a mistake but it made me stronger to become who I am today. It was meant to happen and it has happened. So I am okay.

If you must give marriage another shot, what is that thing you have to stop doing?
Marriage entails a lot of sacrifice but between you and me, I am going to be myself because I am very unique. I am not looking for a boyfriend nor a husband but if God says I will remarry, I will remain the same person I have always been. I won’t change for anything, you will marry me the way I am. I don’t think I can still marry again but if God says this person is right for me, why not, I will go with him.
