Accra: Another Storey Building Collapses at Nii Boi Town

Yes it has happened again, Just barely a year plus since the Melcom incident occurred at Achimota, Ghanaians have witnessed another of such at Nii Boi Town, near Abeka Lapaz as a 7 storey hotel collapses.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikoi North, Elizabeth Sackey is blaming the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for the collapse of the seven-storey uncompleted hotel building at Nii Boi Town in Accra.

According to her, the AMA, whose responsibility it is to ensure that the structure is built to the required specification, has failed in its duties.

She, therefore, requested that the building inspector at the AMA responsible for overseeing the contruction of the building be made to explain the circumstances under which the building collapsed.

Earth-moving equipment are busy digging deep into the rubble to rescue people believed to be trapped under the collapsed building.

The building collapsed at dawn, Thursday, trapping an unconfirmed number of people, most of whom are believed to be construction workers.

Government has announced plans to set up a technical committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the collapse.

The Deputy Works and Housing Minister, Samson Ahi, who also visited the site told journalists there is a search for the owner of the building.

According to him, depending on the outcome of the technical committee's investigations, the owner of the building may be made to face the law.

Bayern president Hoeness jailed for three-and-a-half years for tax evasion

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison after being found guilty of tax evasion.

Prosecutors had argued that Hoeness's voluntary disclosure - that he had failed to pay taxes - was incomplete and thus did not meet a vital requirement needed for amnesty under German tax laws designed to encourage tax evaders to come clean.

Hoeness has admitted he evaded 27.2 million euros (£22.7m) in taxes on income earned in secret Swiss bank accounts but the 62-year-old was hoping for leniency in one of the most closely watched tax evasion cases in German history.

The case hinged on the question whether Hoeness, who as a player helped West Germany win the 1974 World Cup, fully cooperated with his voluntary disclosure. It shocked the nation and prompted thousands of tax dodgers to turn themselves in.
